Pelosi Weighs In On Obama's Vow To Repeal DOMA
On Barack Obama's web site, the "Pride" section reads: "Obama also believes we need to fully repeal the Defense of Marriage Act and enact legislation that would ensure that 1,100+ federal legal rights and benefits currently provided on the basis of marital status are extended to same-sex couples in civil unions and other legally recognized unions." (Read Statement).
DOMA, as you know, defines marriage as the legal union between one man and one woman for purposes of all federal laws. It was actually signed into law by President Bill Clinton after being passed by a Republican-controlled Congress in 1996. DOMA protects states from having to recognize same-sex "marriages" contracted in other states. Ordinarily, states would be required to recognize such contracts under the "Full Faith and Credit Clause" of the Constitution.
Barack Obama has vowed to repeal it if elected President. This, of course, would be huge for the homosexual activists, particularly in light of what they are doing in Massachusetts and California.
Now Speaker Nancy Pelosi has weighed in on Obama's vow.
CNSNEWS asked her this past week if she will support Obama's policy.
She answered a quiet "Yes".
This issue has been rather divisive, and probably will become more so among the liberal left. They know that a majority of Americans do not want traditional marriage thrown under the bus and whether or not they operate with core values I cannot say, however, I do know they love their job.
While Pelosi voted against DOMA in 1996, a number of her liberal co-horts voted in favor of it. Richard Durbin and Charles Schumer were among them, but when CNSNEWS ask them if they would support Obama's vow, they were uncertain, with the typical, "I'll have to look at the legislation, must wait and see what it is," avoidance.
I'm sure their are others on the left who share their hesitation. Perhaps Barack Obama, Howard Dean, the leader of the Democrats, and Moveon.org are too progressive for some in the Party. On the one hand they must support their guy, yet on the other hand they must wonder if the folks at home will support policy that is that far left.
One thing that is certain, he is committed to demolishing the wall that is protecting traditional marriage from the incessant homosexual march to completely redefine marriage, opening the door for a national policy that endorses both homosexual marriage and polygamy.
Much hangs in the balance.

What's changed is two states now have legally married couples who are of the same gender. By the republican nature of our federal government they can't say they are only going to acknowledge some totally legal marriage contracts by the states. That's why DOMA needs to be changed either by just removing this restriction or rescind DOMA and pass new legislation that covers the part of DOMA the federal government does have a say in - that states do not have to recognize each other's marriage contracts.
Oshtur I think legally under the Constitution you may be right ?
I would think it would have been brought up by now in a specfic case before the Supreme Court by now . I can't see how the Feds can say which marriage contracts they support and which they don't once a contract is accepted by the state ?
But on the other hand , some states allow strict gun control laws and others do not ? If a state said machine guns were allowed in Montana say, could the Feds still have laws banning assault weapons ?
Best if the courts NOT handle this in my opinion .
States should decide is ow i normally see things , yet social security and other married couple benefits are Federal in which the DOMA laws are attached to .
