State Rejects Christian Education
It's underway. A federal district court is deciding whether a state university system can dictate that private Christian schools in the state teach college prep courses from exclusively secular textbooks.
University of California adopted a policy last year that basic science, history and literature textbooks by major Christian book publishers wouldn't qualify for core admissions requirements because of the inclusion of Christian perspectives.
Now they are starting to enforce the policy.
In depositions for the court, UC representatives made it clear: whether it is English, history or science, the addition of a religious viewpoint makes it unacceptable.
Their position is not only unconstitutional, but hypocritical.
It is also contradictory.
World Net Daily, who is reporting the story, quotes attorney Robert Tyler who is representing Calvary Chapel Christian School in the case saying, "The University's discriminatory policy creates an ultimatum for Christian schools. If you want courses to be approved in private education, so your students are qualified to attend (UC) institutions, you must teach from a secular worldview, so that kids can enter the UC school system."
"The UC," he said, "is intent upon defending some 'right' to discriminate unlawfully. They seem steadfast that students will not be adequately prepared for college because a Christian worldview was added to the curriculum."
Burt Carney, an executive with the Association of Christian Schools International, said he has met with the UC people and was told that they had no problem with the actual facts in a physics textbook that they disallowed.
In fact, he said in a written report that the UC officials confirmed, "that if the Scripture verses that begin each chapter were removed, the textbook would likely be approved."
Carney points out that here is a University that talks about academic freedom, but is very discriminatory. They don't rule against Muslim or Hindu--only Christian themes.
The University routinely approves courses which add viewpoints such as non-Christian religion, feminism, an ethnic preference, a political viewpoint, multiculturalism or a focus on religions such as Buddhism or Judaism.
Example: "Intro To Buddhism", "Intro To Jewish Thought", "Women's Studies & Feminism" and "Raza Studies" are accepted electives, but "Special Providence: American Government" is not acceptable as either an elective or a civics course.
The state school system is assuming increasing authority over secondary schools in California and elsewhere, by expanding the reach and impact of requirements for students in non-public schools.
The court documents claim that, "Even without authority for and guidance in doing so, UC schools press onward from deciding admission guidelines to determining what viewpoints may and may not be taught in secondary class rooms, which books may or may not be used, and what students with the same test scores are and are not eligible for admission to the University of California."
The secular left is becoming less and less discreet in their hypocrisy.
Freedom of expression is relative to what you want to express.
Academic freedom is relative to what you want to learn.
And "choice" is relative to what choice you want to make.
Those who do not fit the lockstep forward march of the leftist secularism are slowly and surely being marginalized.
I sincerely hope we conservatives and people of faith will awaken from the warm, soothing waters of the kettle before it is too late.

American Family Association does boycotts when there is discrimination against Christians. Maybe UC will get the hint when their student enrollment is down. It's sad but sometimes hitting them in their wallets gets the eyes to open. We all have to remember Jesus says they will hate us because he was first hated. It's not going to get better; it will get worse for us Christians. We need to not waver and give in but Stand Boldly for what we believe.
Gary,
I regret that your post is so nauseatingly partisan. It would helpful if you eliminated this partisanship and simply shared the facts and possible implications with the labels, false relationships, etc., etc.
The fact is there are many on the left - I wouldn't be surprised if this included the ACLU (have you contacted the California chapter??) - who would be equally appalled if the situation was exactly as you presented it.
To neatly attach secular and left is partisanship and simply false. To attach conservative and people of faith is likely partisan and simply false.
Further, because you have slanted so much material, I was very suspect from the beginning concerning the actual situation and whether you wove it to fit your purposes. I am left with the same highly doubtful sense at the end - this is a classic "boys crys "Wolf" scene.
This sort of behavior does not help your cause. If you truly want to make the world a better place (I assume that is your goal though it is a bit murkey with the sort of underhanded, deceptive political techniques that you are using).
Also, as a side note - for those of us in Christ - it will NEVER be too late - we already have LIFE. No fear mongering will affect us or anything.
Sincerely,
Greg
And the left accuses Christians of trying to force them to live by our standards.
Thank you Gary for ths blog. Nearly every Sunday we talk about something you have written in our Sunday school class. I'm sure this one will be discussed.
God bless you and keep up the good work.
GReg. you don't get the 'purpose' of this site obviously!
Gary is doing a fantastic job, and many of us are SO grateful for his information daily, that is so needed to be shared!
Thank you! Someone needed to say that to Greg. Yet, that is what this is for, to comment. We just need to work together. Being informed is a great thing. Even if it's not what you want to hear. Gary does his homework and that is why what he says, is right on the mark.
Thanks Gary, for your hard work.
God bless all who read his blogg. Even you Greg...
Dearest Greg,
I could not help but comment on your comments about partisan descriptions. I believe the intent is to pose the view of those who think and believe differently from the world.
I was just a bit confused by your comments: you sound so angry in the responses you send.
It sounds like you are saying you are a believer and follower of Christ. If this is so, I cannot understand your rage at the column.
Why waste your time doing this? I am certain that Gary is not trying to make the world a better place, but is rather trying to show us what is going on so that we can respond appropriately through comment or prayer.
The world is not going to be a better place in the end: As we know it right now, it will not exist!
Love ya! D.
If you teach quack science, don't expect to be taken seriously. It's not even good theology. :)
Belief in God and evolution are compatible. Perpetuating the idea that this is a conflict between a secular science and religion is deeply misinformed. It's really a conflict between one extremely intolerant religion, and many other religious and scientific viewpoints.
Greg,
I can appreciate your viewpoint, and although the author did skew this comment, it doesn't take very far to go straight to the source to get information about what this is all about. It's all located here: http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/news/acsi-stearns/ruling0808.pdf
The term "left" is used to describe a liberal viewpoint. In this case, conservative means favoring traditional views and values, and liberal, the opposite. The description that you might have taken away was political, but that was merely implied and assumed on your part.
Finally, I am grateful to hear about this, but would like to a) have a list of the courses that are not accepted, as well as the course objectives, and b) believe that we as Christians should organize strikes and walk outs against illegal and unfair religious persecution.
