Information Update Re: Domestic Partnerships in WA State
We mentioned yesterday that we had not received a call back from Olympia at the time we published the Blog.
We had ask the Secretary of State's office for the most recent number of domestic partnerships in Washington State since the law was signed.
The Secretary of State returned our call shortly after the Blog was published. They reported that 3061 couples have registered as domestic partners. This seems to be consistent with what has happened in other states.
It seems there is no big rush for the "benefits."

Really?
It has been 144 days since domestic partnership registration was allowed with 3,061 married couples having done so. Using last year's secular contract of marriage licensing data, that time period would have seen the licensing of 16,160 marriage contracts.
So looking at them together 16% of them were for domestic partnership licenses.
So considering that even in Washington state only 2% of the population is out gay citizens that means they are adopting the contract at around 8 times the rate that others are licensing their special rights contract.
Seems my prediction from the other thread was right - domestic partnerships are sought after and being licensed at massively accelerated rates. Just imagine how many there would have been if it wasn't just a discriminatory 'marriage lite' solution?
As a personal note we only registered recently ourselves.
I thought it was kind of telling the recent tax fix by the same liberals in Olympia used an income level of 50 thousand to qualify you for a property tax deferal .
So two gay men would loose out on this benefit if they combined their two incomes together . Solving problems for one special interst group at a time usually gets you re elected , but almost always makes things worse .
Mick, since 2 opposite gender citizens would be in the same situation I don't see the relevance?
Oh you aren't under the false assumption that registering as domestic partners means the two citizens automatically 'combine their incomes' as far as the state is concerned are you? No, no, no - that is the a problem of YOUR special interest group. By limiting the contract of marriage as a special right that's your problem, not ours.
So I do agree, solving problems by special interests groups can lead to a tangled web - far better that all married citizens had license to the same marriage contract. But you guys love your special rights just too much for that I suppose.
