Evangelicals Looking Beyond Republicans
Associated Press is quoted on MSNBC as reporting that more than half of white evangelical Republicans would consider voting for a third party candidate should the 2008 presidential race have Hillary Clinton against Rudy Giuliani.
The poll, released a little over a week ago by PEW Research Center, is the latest evidence of discontent among Republican voters.
The poll shows that 55% of white evangelical Republicans said that they would consider a third party conservative if it is a Clinton-Giuliani ticket. Forty-two percent said they would not.
Our own unofficial Faith and Freedom poll is tracking about 80% who would not vote for a presidential candidate who was does not hold a pro-life position.
Here is the problem that faith or "values" voters face.
There is a vigorous argument made by some in the faith community that a third party effort would produce a candidate that is unelectable. The thought, of course, is that Rudy could beat Hillary. And even if he does not hold the values of the faith community regarding abortion and gay-rights, he will appoint conservative, constructionist judges.
There are at least two problems with this thinking.
First, will he actually appoint conservative, constructionist, judges? Maybe he will, but who knows?
Secondly, current polls are showing that Hillary will beat Rudy based on current trends. In fact, the Pew Poll taken just a few days ago shows that at current trends, she beats him by 8 points.
Also, according to Pew, evangelicals comprise about 34% of Republicans and Republican-leaning voters. There are also Democrats who vote traditional, biblical values. My father was one of them until he was introduced to Ronald Reagan.
I am not trying to make a case for or against Rudy Giuliani, a third party, or for that matter, any political case.
My concern is one of principle -- traditional, biblical values. Those principles upon which America was built and has prospered.
The secularists, when given power, move quickly and decisively to enact laws that are unacceptable to people of faith. Nowhere is that more evident than right here in the Northwest. Washington and Oregon are beacons of the secular agenda.
While politics is the vehicle, principle is purpose for our deep concern.
Ancient Scripture says that unless God builds the house they that build, do so in vain. This country was built on strong biblical principles. There are those among us who would strip every vestige of our Christian heritage from our public experience.
The 2008 elections may be the most important in our lifetime--and that of our children and grandchildren as well.
Please be prayerful.

Dr. Dobson has flat out stated he won't endorse anyone short of the Lord Himself. Bob Jones has endorsed Mitt Romney who is a known flip flopper, and changes like the wheat in the wind to get ahead politically. Pat Robertson has endorsed Rudy Gulianni. Folks if we are split on the candidate that runs against Hillary or any other Democratic candidate we all lose regardless. We can change a RINO, we can't even talk to Hillary Clinton.
It seems to me that the solution is simple. If there is such a consensus among Christians to not vote for Giuliana then what we need to do identify someone else to promote, and focus our efforts on making that person the republican candidate.
I keep hearing all of this anti-so-and-so and anti-such-and-such, but what I don't understand is why we can't stand together to be FOR anyone. It's like a bunch of children bickering. It's all self centered, not God centered. Let me ask everyone the obvious question. WHICH CANDIDATE DOES GOD WANT US TO VOTE FOR? Because I can assure you that God isn't jumping around between this one and that one without focus like we Christians seem to be doing.
People, let's figure out who we are FOR instead of who we are against. Do you need some scriptural inspiration? Try this one:
Joshua 5:13-15
Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in his hand. Joshua went up to him and asked, "Are you for us or for our enemies?"
"Neither," he replied, "but as commander of the army of the LORD I have now come." Then Joshua fell facedown to the ground in reverence, and asked him, "What message does my Lord have for his servant?"
The commander of the LORD's army replied, "Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy." And Joshua did so. (NIV)
I think that makes it clear what we need to do: Pray and ask God who He is for.
James :)
Regarding today's "blog", your two "problems" are not substantiated. Maybe you don't know who Rudy would appoint to the Supreme Court, but you do know who Hillary would appoint, and that has to be worse. Secondly, the "fact" that Rudy would lose to Hillary is very questionable and any abandonment of the GOP candidate, whoever it is (I believe that it will be Mitt Romney), will ensure Hillary's election. Your main problem is that you don't understand politics; principles don't work there the same way they work in our personal lives. The only way to vote is to choose the lesser of two evils and in this case its anyone running against either Hillary or Obama, and that is a fact!
We are in contact with many politically aware, conservative evangelicals across the nation, and we believe that nearly all we know would have serious problems voting for most, if not all, current Republican options. Voting for a third party candidate or abstaining from voting altogether--regardless of the consequences in this next presidential election--is looking more like the most Biblically ethical option all the time for many of us. -- Montesano, WA
Oh oh ,
President Hillary is upon us .
I do believe the "handwriting on the wall" should be making us aware that this next presidential election will be the last! It is coming to the time the Lord is coming for his "bride"! Praise the Lord! I do believe we are in "that generation" that will be involved in the "twinkling of an eye"!
All the candidates are "negative" in my estimation. I also, do believe Mr and Ms Hillary Clinton will win the election! We are in that bad of straits in this country. The liberals have won the "desires of their hearts" and have made their choices. Those who have not succumbed to the liberal agenda and are believers in our Lord Jesus Christ will be "whisked" away!
Jesus said, how can you tell the signs of the weather but you cannot read the signs of the times! It is time for all true Christians to LOOK UP!
With the time that is left, we must spread the Gospel of Jesus to all who will listen.
For those who lived and encountered Jesus on earth, they too had opportunity to believe. Now, we who are alive at his coming can rejoice that his footsteps can be heard!
Romney recently gained the endorsements of Bob Jones III and Robert Taylor, leaders of the influential conservative Christian college that teaches the Mormon Church as a cult. If THEY can endorse Romney, then we should not hesitate.
People, open your eyes. There IS a candidate we can support, and who can win the election in November, 2008. He has prevailed several times against the Clinton Democrat machine, and can do so again one year from now.
All that this candidate needs is your support now, so he can win the nomination. Why worry about the likes of Gulianni or Romney when there is a candidate who is far superior to the pro-life movement, who has consistantly, and throughout his life been pro-life. He also has more years of Executive experience than any other candidate.
I, for one, will be voting for Mike Huckabee. Take a good look at his web site and watch the video clips (a great one is from the FRC Value Voters summit). As he said in that speech (my paraphrase), "I am not coming TO you, I have come FROM you" (speaking to "value voters").
Anonymous 11:47 a.m. - So we can't vote because none of the candidates are perfect? I have two things to say about that: (1) Nobody's perfect. If the most "Christian" thing to do is to only vote for perfect candidates, then God help us. (2) If none of the candidates are acceptable, then that is our failure as Christians. Where are the candidates for righteousness? Did we all think we could slack off because we had a Christian in office during the past 8 years? For shame...
Anonymous 2:07 p.m. - I have some news which may shock you. The "handwriting" may be on the wall, but things aren't going to happen the way you think. Jesus will not be returning to the present day "wimpy" church. Jesus already did His job 2000 years ago, and then He left this world in our hands with an edict that we must fulfill. For Him to return before we accomplish that would be a failure, and God does NOT fail.
MARK MY WORDS. The end times are not going to be the evils of this world rising up to blot out a diminishing church that can no longer stand up against their "political agendas". Before the end can come, the church must rise up in the power and authority that God intended us to have. The true end times will be satan's last act in terrified desperation against a church of which the gates of hell can NEVER prevail!!!! (Matthew 16:18-19). Christ is not returning to save us again, He is returning to possess this world that will be given to Him by the hands of His triumphant church who overcame it!
My friends, don't you dare give up the presidency!
James :)
I've MARKED YOUR WORDS, James, and frankly, the power hungry triumphalism of those word is very reminiscent of the rants of the Islamic terrorists attacking our nation, is appalling.
Jack in Seattle :)
Wow Jack. I hope you aren't afraid of me now. Let me clarify that what I'm talking about isn't military power or violence against people.
There are evil spiritual forces trying to control this world. I believe the church has the authority and responsibility to take them out.
Bill Wakeley, Mike Huckabee sounds like a good candidate to me as well.
James :)
żElection 1994 and 2008 is History about to repeat?
This Evangelical voter would rather vote for Rudy Giuliani and take a bath and shower after casting my vote than vote for a third party candidate. Fact remains Ross Perot diverted votes from G. H. W. Bush to Bill Clinton. It would be far better to infiltrate the democratic party than to create a third party.
No James, I'm not afraid of you. I'm not afraid of the Islamic terrorists either, letting fear rule ones life (as so many on the right have done) is self-defeating and leads to stupid mistakes (see letting Bin Laden - remember him?- escape in Tora Bora to launch an ill-considered and ill-advised war of choice in Iraq.
Jack in Seattle :)
