It Is As Bad As You Think

Bret Chenkin, an English teacher at Mount Anthony Union High School in Vermont, got caught last week.

While he was supposed to be teaching English, he was using his influence to blatantly advance his own liberal agenda.

Sample question on his quiz:

“I wish Bush would be (coherent, eschewed) for once during a speech, but there are theories that his everyday diction charms the below-average mind, hence insuring him Republican voters.”

The students were to choose whether “coherent” or “eschewed” was the proper word.

Another example said, “It is frightening the way the extreme Right has (balled, arrogated) aspects of the Constitution and warped them for their own agenda.”

I think arrogated would be the proper word in that case.

When Mr. Chenkin was confronted by Superintendent Wesley Knapp he said, “The kids know it’s hyperbolic, so-to-speak. They know its tongue in cheek.”

This is yet another example of the assault on our children under the guise of education.

I’m reminded of the words of Abraham Lincoln, “The philosophy of the classroom of one generation will be the philosophy of the government of the next.”

Is your problem with this that the vocabulary is too difficult for this grade level or that he is using English class to also teach civics and how it is an American right to have the freedom to criticize those in power? And how does any of this connect with "preserving traditional Judeo-Christian values in America's public life"?

To the above: I think the problem is that this teacher is needlessly injecting political into a school lesson where virulent political views of any stripe have no place. Most people are able to recognize that. I can't remember any time in my public schooling days where any president was so viciously attacked during what was supposed to be an acadmemic exercise. Respectful political discussions are one thing (and they do have them at our kids' christian schoo, but political cheap shots disguised as school lessons for kids has no place.

Again, I fail to see how this has anything to do with the expressed intent of the Faith and Freedom Network - unless you are needlessly (and erroneously) interjecting "Bush" and "Republican" into the category of "traditional Judeo-Christian values", where they simply have no place in. Additionally, as an educator I have to take offensive at the notion that this could not have simply been good teaching. If Mr. Chenkin's class was particularly motivated by present day American politics, using that as the base for this quiz would not only be appropriate, but it would be wise. I teach mathematics and when I found my class was filled with baseball fans, I adjusted my examples to use to include massive salaries and home run totals. But I'm sure that was a possibility you thoroughly investigated before you just decided what his true motives were.

op 5 End Times Signs of 2005?
by Dr. Stu Johnson
posted 12/1/05

Most of the "signs" we talk about today are not new to human history. Since Jesus told his disciples about the "signs," hundreds of millions of people have died from war, genocide, disease, famine, and natural and other disasters. While 45 million or more died in World War II, tens of millions died in each of at least four Chinese rebellions between 756 and 1864. And while the 2004 earthquake and tsunami claimed nearly 300,000, the worst earthquake death toll is estimated at 830,000 in Shaanxi, China, in 1556 (from a list of hundreds of events on the Wikopedia online encyclopedia).

The morning The Regime was released, Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins appeared on Good Morning America. Lead-ins to the segment and one of the first questions hit the issue of the recent earthquakes and hurricanes as apocalyptic signs. Dr. LaHaye said these are not specific signs, but he does believe their apparent increase and intensity is an indicator that the stage is being set, the time is ripe.

Prophecy expert Mark Hitchcock agrees. In numerous articles in the Left Behind Prophecy newsletter, Mark explained this view.

I don't believe that earthquakes we see today are a specific sign of Christ's soon return. The earthquakes predicted by Jesus and John are great earthquakes that will occur during the seven-year tribulation. And we are not yet in the tribulation.

In the article about Hurricane Katrina, Hitchcock concluded what we see now may "foreshadow the kinds of disasters that will occur during the tribulation, and that they provide us with graphic, striking previews of the chaos and misery that will prevail during the coming time of tribulation. In this way they serve as a stern warning and foretaste to all of what is coming upon the earth and should lead people to repent before it's too late" (Luke 13:1-5).
Mark of the Beast

The Mark of the Beast is another example of a "sign" that produces intense speculation—and it's not new. Any kind of government record keeping, especially with numbers attached, has been suspect—driver's licenses, Social Security cards, etc. Now, the possibilities get ever more Orwellian. A school district in California, for example, recently used Radio Frequency ID technology, to bring GPS surveillance to student ID cards.

The mark of the beast is often misunderstood as a sign of the approaching end times, but the pre-tribulation view of prophecy that provides the background for the Left Behind stories says the mark will be used by Antichrist as a loyalty sign following his ascendancy during the Tribulation.
Antichrist

Amidst the speculation about who could become Antichrist, prophecy experts like LaHaye and Hitchcock point out that there have been numerous antichrist types throughout history, men such as Adolph Hitler, Josef Stalin, and Sadaam Hussein. As we have seen in The Rising and The Regime, Antichrist will likely emerge from the likes of Nicolae Carpathia, whose public charisma hides his evil soul. Most prophecy experts do agree that Antichrist will arise out of Europe, which itself plays a key role in the end times.
What to watch

So what are the real signs to watch? Tim LaHaye, Mark Hitchcock, and other prophecy experts all point to the regathering of Israel as the "supersign," with other key events focused on Europe and the Middle East.

Here are five key areas from the news this past year. In many cases we do not see huge steps, like the establishment of Israel following World War II, but many little pieces begin to fall into place when compared to prophecy and history.

1. Israel. An interesting benchmark is coming soon as the Jewish population in Israel is expected to become the largest in the world, surpassing that of the United States. This has been a tumultuous year, with the disengagement from Gaza producing praise from many in the international community and protest from staunch Zionists who feel Israel should inhabit all of its biblical territory. The continued tensions may make Israel ripe for the international intervention of Daniel 9.

Another significant event went largely unnoticed. The ancient Sanhedrin, the official legal tribunal in Israel, convened in October 2004—the first time in 1,600 years. In its February 2005 meeting, it took up the topic of rebuilding the temple. At its June meeting, the Sanhedrin issued an official call to rebuild the temple. Of course, the Temple Mount is now in Muslim hands.
2. Europe. In this year that celebrated the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II, the reemergence of the Roman Empire (a.k.a. the European Union) on the world scene has been moving ahead, but not without obstacles. The EU continues to expand in size, though the adoption of a constitution was rebuffed. Tensions over radical-Islamic terrorism and Muslim immigration in general were seen in the London bombing and the recent riots in France. This could feed acceptance of the strong ruling body predicted by Daniel, as Russia and the Arab/Islamic nations come together against Europe and the West
3. Russia. Russia has tried to make drastic reforms, but can't escape her past. President Putin has been moving to consolidate power and neutralize potential opposition. In an apparent power-grab, Putin abolished direct election of the 89 governors of the various regions of Russia. In his annual state of the nation address in April, he mourned the fall of the Soviet Union and raised fears he is reversing democracy.
4. Iraq and the Middle East. Oil drives modern society, and most of it is found in the Middle East. This connection also puts in place the conditions in Ezekiel 38-39 to surround Israel with the enemies prepared to wipe it out. While the major battlefields of war have been shifting from Europe and Asia to the Middle East, a peaceful Iraq will encourage relations with Europe, setting the stage for the eventual rebuilding of Babylon as headquarters for Antichrist. While the situation is still dangerous and uncertain, two elections have already been successful, with the third scheduled this month. With Iraq situated in the middle of two-thirds of the world's proven oil reserves, there is even more reason for Europe to develop good relations.
5. Iran. Ezekiel 38 suggests that a coalition between Iran (Persia) and Russia (Rosh) will lead an alliance against Israel. Iran's nuclear ambitions have troubled the world and Russia has proven to be a key player, even a potential "solution." Iran also maintains a troubling relation with North Korea. Iran's new president publicly called for the destruction of Israel, while at the same time strengthening ties with Russia.

Much of the speculation about end times signs comes from interpretations of Jesus' words recorded in Matthew 24 in which he talked about war, famine, earthquakes, growing sin, and diminishing love before his return. He also warned against listening to false prophets and making too much of the signs, since even he did not know the exact time the Father would send him back.

To above: It's quite clear that you are defending a liberal teacher's attempt to propagandize kids. That attempt is not proper. Imagine the same scenario except with Clinton's name. I suspect you'd have to problem with it. And that IS the problem. Personally, I would not want to see something like about Clinton on my kids' test. But this is what passes for OK in public school, these days. THAT'S the problem. It's intellectually dishonest.
A civilized discussion is okay, but gratuitous swipes at a sitting president on a test are NOT.

It is important what we teach kids in the class room especially when it comes to moral values and Marriage between a Man and a woman because those ideas will reflect Govenrment in the Future if we take God completely out of the schools and holidays that will reflect on the younger generation as well..

so we must keep God in Marriage as one man and one woman and in our public schools
and put prayers back in our schools

It is wrong for a teacher to put down A current President all it does is teach disrespect for the office of presidency. No teacher should oppose their own political agenda in the classroom schools are designed to teach morality and to teach kids basic life skills

The public school system has been totally hijacked by the anti-Christian movement to promote its vision of a godless society. How ironic, since the founder of the public school system, Noah Webster, was a devout Christian who used the Bible as the primary textbook. Had a Christian worked any personal viewpoints into such an English lesson, he/she would have been fired and the School District would have faced legal action from the ACLU. Christians have been asleep, but I think there is still time to wake up and get our country back, if we call upon the name of Jehovah Sabaoth to deliver us, while we do our duty (repentance, humility, and authentic holiness.)

What does this have to do with a teacher making a point of Bush's inarticulacy? Do you equate an attack on Bush with an attack on christianity?

At 9:50 AM, December 03, 2005, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Speaking of Bush's communication difficulties, isn't it curious that he thinks God told him to invade Iraq, but the Pope heard something entirely different from God? I'm guessing one them doesn't listen very well.

No, I'm defending a teacher's attempt to educate kids. Not everything that isn't done the way you like it is an intentional attack on Christianity or Bush or whatever cause you are trying to pretend you are a martyr for. No, I wouldn't have an issue if it was done with Clinton or anyone else - if the intent is for education. And these ridiculous attacks on public education don't reflect any Christian values on your part - they make you look like you are looking for reasons to play the victim and whine. I'm a Christian public school teacher and I've had nothing but support from my administration and district for me sharing my personal views in appropriate ways so long as the children's education is still the priority. Here are some simple inequalities for you all to grasp:
Bush does NOT equal Christianity
Public Schools do NOT equal the devil.
Overreacting and jumping to mean-spirited and unwarranted wannabe victimized roles does NOT equal having a civilized discussion

will not accept political Correctness as being the culprit, it is the ANTI CHRIST CULTURE and devised by Secular Communist which moved to the Democratic Party after the collapse of the Soviet Union. There is no Communist Party such in our politics today as it was prevalent during the 1960's.

Unfortunately in 1965 Angela Davis a Communist Sympathizer infiltrated the University system in California and won her court case allowing her to stay as a Professor at UC Berkley in Berkley Ca, this opened the insurgence of Communists into the UNIVERSITY REGENTS across America: a devised infiltration to attack AMERICA within.

They have long sense taken control of our Elementary School Systems and are Terrorizing America through our Schools. They took out Prayer, Now they are attacking the TERM CHRIST, and any mentioning of GOD.

In the Place of God they have Used the RIGHTS of just one Child who came to America and are being used to Attack Religion, only that Child is fictitious for it is a Child of That Secular Teacher that is whom the Parents and contest the use of any mentioning of a God in School systems.

Without our Religion, America will not be the same, it is the back bone of our survival, a COUNTRY Devised by our Founding Fathers to allow us all to have our Religion as we wish to serve it exist through UNITY in our Existence.

Take out God from being mentioned and we will be holding Church underground and in secrete places. I contend that if it had been devised to remove Religion as we use it , not as was in the UK ONE Church and only one Church of England as our Forefathers left and designed a Christian Based civilization. Our Founding Fathers would have placed into our Constitution much more mentioning of Church and our Government.

The Only mentioning of Church and State within our Constitution is; "No government shall make laws against or establishing a Religion" MEANING like the Church of England, the only recognized Church during that time.

The Communist also devised a particular Lawyer Establishment to help fight their attacking our way of life. TODAY we call them the ACLU.
Ask the UCLU to take on Government when our Religious Rights are being taken away and they will abstain.
